Thick Film Pastes use in next generation biosensors

Thick film pastes have broad application in the manufacture of sensors including gas (carbon monoxide, methane detection), temperature, humidity, pressure and position sensors.

Biosensors are becoming more routinely used in agriculture for monitoring pesticides and fertiliser concentration levels, water purity devices and point of care diagnostics.

The advent of new sustainable aviation fuels requires new sensors to be developed to monitor fuel quality. Using our gold, platinum, silver and overglaze thick film pastes we developed a novel three working electrode biosensor device that could survive very aggressive environments. The working electrode is of particular importance as it requires to consistently bond the molecular diagnostic reagents. The electrodes are produced with low levels of porosity and with controlled surface roughness.

Gold Profilometer

To support our customer’s development, sensors were printed using Dycotec’s range of industrial printers and fired. Surface roughness was measured to an accuracy of less <0.4 nm using our high precision surface profilometry technology. In our dedicated biosensor application lab, we worked closely with the customer to support on test protocol development.

The end result was biosensor with the state of art accuracy and sensitivity to measure sustainable aviation fuel contamination to part per million (ppm) levels.
